Co-Curricular Activities
Goals
While we will strive to do our best in competition, we will do so only within the parameters of our mission statement, policies and goals. The success of our programs will not be determined by whether we win championships, but by whether we achieve our purpose.
The goals of Shiloh’s co-curricular programs are as follows:
- Teach and integrate Christian life principles and character qualities to participants, and thereby help carry out the mission statement.
- Help each participant accept the way God has created him/her, and enhance the emotional well being of each participant.
- Serve as a positive witness/representative for Shiloh Christian School.
- Teach fundamentals and provide the opportunity/privilege to participate.
Guidelines for lettering shall be provided, in writing, by the coach to the athletic director and the students at the beginning of the season. Letters shall not be awarded to any student athlete in a sport during which the student is guilty of a training violation involving alcohol, tobacco or drugs. This shall not affect letters earned in previous or later sports.
Eligibility for Co-Curricular Activities
In order to try out and/or participate for any co-curricular activity, a student must be enrolled for the school year in which the activity will take place. Paid registration and/or tuition fees will determine enrollment. Entrants in North Dakota High School Activities Association competition must comply with the General Regulations as stated in the NDHSAA Handbook.
Ineligibility for Grades
Grades will be evaluated approximately every three weeks.
Ineligibility occurs when:
- A student failed a course or did not have an overall average of 76% at the end of the last evaluation period for the preceding school year, they are ineligible for the first four weeks of the new school year per NDHSAA.
- A student has a failing grade or an overall average les than 76% at the three week evaluation period, that student will be put on a three week probationary period to either pass the failing course or reach an overall average of 76% or higher. If those standards are met, then the student remains eligible; if not, the student is ineligible for the next three weeks.
Ineligibility means
- The student can practice but cannot participate in any event. This includes sitting on the bench with the team, singing the National Anthem, and etc.
- Ineligible students cannot ride the bus on out of town events and/or perform as listed above.
Duration of Ineligibility
Students will remain ineligible until the next evaluation period. A failing semester or final grade will result in the student being ineligible for the following four weeks of school, according to the NDHSAA. This is the only situation where the semester or final grade will supersede the nine-week grade.
Participation When Absent from School
A student must attend school for the entire day (unless excused by Administration) in order to practice or participate in any co-curricular activities occurring that day.
Alcohol, Tobacco and Drugs
Use of alcohol, tobacco or drugs is prohibited. If use of alcohol, tobacco or drugs is clearly established, at any time during the school year, the student shall be suspended from participation in contests for a six-week period. This shall include guilt by association. If an alcohol, tobacco or drug use violation occurs within less than six weeks remaining in a school year, the six weeks shall carry into the next school year. A second offense will result in suspension from all co-curricular activities at Shiloh for the year of such offense. Appropriate addiction evaluation or counseling shall be required after a second offense.
Swearing in Practice/Competition
Swearing during practice sessions shall be disciplined at the coach’s discretion. Swearing during athletic contests shall result in being benched for the remainder of that contest, plus the next contest. A second swearing incident during competition will result in being benched from that contest, plus suspension for the next two contests. In cases of uncertainty coaches shall make discipline judgments.
Home School Participation
Home schoolers are allowed to participate in cross country, football, soccer, baseball, and track.
